Beauty Box Subscriptions Pros & Cons: Boxycharm vs. Ipsy vs. Play! by Sephora

August 12, 2017 by Lisa Leave a Comment

If you follow my Instagram, you may have noticed I’m a bit of a makeup junkie. I could spend hours at Sephora swatching lipsticks, blushes and shadows. Walking into a drugstore without wandering through the cosmetic aisles is practically impossible. But as a working mom, I don’t have that kind of time. That’s why I love the idea of beauty box subscriptions.

There are several monthly beauty subscriptions to choose from and it’s tempting to want them all. At least it’s tempting for me.

Over the last year, I’ve subscribed and unsubscribed from three: Boxycharm, Ipsy and Play! by Sephora.

(Birchbox and Scentbird are on my wishlist so you may see those reviews soon.)

Pros & Cons of Beauty Box Subscriptions: Boxycharm, Ipsy & Sephora

Before I get into the pros and cons of each subscription beauty box – please know that this is my own personal opinion as an over 40 mom who loves makeup. I also don’t have a preference for any particular brands/products. While I appreciate products that are all natural and cruelty/toxin free, it’s not a deal breaker for me.

BOXYCHARM

Pro: With BOXYCHARM you get 5 full-size and luxury travel-size products for only $21 per month with a retail value over $100 & free shipping. You get a lot of bang for your buck. From eyeshadow palettes, make up brushes to liquid lipsticks and so much more – BOXYCHARM is fun for the beauty lover.

Con: It’s the most expensive of the three beauty subscriptions. As with most subscriptions, shades and items will vary – so you could something you love and then not receive it. And sometimes the color selections are pretty dramatic if you’re neutral makeup loving gal. In one BOXYCHARM box, I received an Ofra liquid lipstick. I enjoy Ofra liquid lipsticks, I’ve purchased them on my own but the color I received was a deep metallic purple. I gave it away to my friend’s daughter. After a few months, I realized I was giving away more products than I was keeping.

This was the subscription I’ve unsubscribed from and I kind of regret doing it. Especially when I see products that I want to try or really love. But it was just an expense I wanted to cut out.

Ipsy

Pro: With Ipsy you receive 5 sample size products for $10 a month + the Ipsy Glam Bag. And I am all about that Glam Bag! Sometimes I think the bag is worth more than any of the products inside. That’s just me. I use them to store receipts, make up or writing supplies. They’re perfect in my everyday work bag and for travel purposes. I also like sample size products — especially mascara. And there’s almost always a lip treatment and/or hand cream.

IPSY Glam Bag via Atypical Familia by Lisa Quinones FontanezUnlike the other 2 subscriptions, Ipsy allows you to skip a month. I’ve done this if I saw a bag I wasn’t crazy about or if I wanted to minimize monthly expenses.

Con: Similar to BOXYCHARM not all the beauty brands can be found in stores. So if you discover a product you really love, you may need to order it online. Ipsy does have an online shop where you purchase items through but the one you want may not always be available.

Play! by Sephora

Pro: Hands down Play! by Sephora is my favorite beauty box subscription. Each month I received 5 deluxe samples plus a bonus fragrance for $10 a month. Similar to Ipsy, Play! samples arrive in a cute reusable bag.

Unlike BOXYCHARM and Ipsy, all the products you receive are available at Sephora. This makes shopping for your favorite products super convenient. If you have the Sephora app on your phone, you have access to your Play! account. All of the products you’ve received are listed to Buy Now or Add to Basket. So easy.

Another win is that each month with your subscription, you receive a Play! pass card worth 50 Beauty Insider points. Pass is only redeemable in stores with purchase and expires 30 days following receipt (expiration date is located on back of card).

Con: Honestly…I really can’t think of any.

Do you subscribe to any Beauty Box subscriptions? What are your favorites?

I’ve had these skates for 5 years and I finally I’ve had these skates for 5 years and I finally got to skate in them for real. “Why do my skates feel funny?” I wondered. I assumed it was because I’m not used to roller skates. So I spent the first 15 minutes skating with my skates on the wrong feet 🙄😐🤦🏻‍♀️ but once I fixed them - skating was a little bit easier. 🤣🤣

From the moment I met her 2 years ago, I knew she was a force to be reckoned with. In the classroom, she is enthusiastic, bright, confident and strong. But at the gym she’s next level! Mel really pushed me today and I know I’ll feel it tomorrow. It wasn’t easy keeping up with this 19 year old. I held my own up until she said 20 minutes on the stair master after our work out. I lasted 5 minutes and then did 15 on the elliptical. 🫠🫠 And obviously we needed a quick locker room photo shoot. 🤣 Also…I don’t know if it’s the angle or the lighting but I can’t believe my arms/back look like that! 😳🥹

I was so wrong. I am living my best years and fully present in my life. 🤍 5/6/18 🤍 5 years one day at a time (sometimes one hour, one minute, one second).

Started reading Carmen and Grace by @melissacossaq Started reading Carmen and Grace by @melissacossaquino on the 6 train. By page 5, I had to close the book and take a minute to absorb the words on the page. Ok ok ok, I also may have begun tearing up a bit. I love when a book makes me feel. There are times when I come across a book, and the words are exactly what I need at that precise moment. This is that book, this is the time. “The only way out for you is through.” 🤍

Rompers seem like such a cute easy outfit until yo Rompers seem like such a cute easy outfit until you have to pee. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I almost dislocated a shoulder trying to get in and out of this.
Earlier this week, I was unpacking my spring/summe Earlier this week, I was unpacking my spring/summer clothes. I found 3 dresses that I’ve had forever - probably 15 years. They were probably only worn once. I held on to them, even though I couldn’t fit into them. Because I knew one day, I would fit into them again. Over the last 2 years, I’ve lost some weight but they still didn’t fit last summer. When I tried them on this week, they fit! I haven’t been able to fit into these dresses in more than a decade. And so yesterday I put on the blue dress. I didn’t go anywhere spectacular. I wasn’t on a date. I visited a friend in the neighborhood, went to a meeting and then White Castle (don’t judge me). When I first bought this dress and when it fit, I held on to it - waiting for an occasion. I refuse to do that. I’m not waiting for a man to take me out, or a party or an event. If I want to wear something, I will wear it. I am the special occasion. I am the event. I am worth getting dressed up for.

Also - I realize that holding on to clothing for 15 years hoping it will fit again is probably not normal. But oh well. 🤷🏻‍♀️🤣
