Atypical Dad Shares What He Loves About Driving The Kia Soul

June 15, 2014 by Joseph 1 Comment

Disclosure: DriveSTI loaned us a Kia Soul for our time in Orlando. No other compensation was received. As always, opinions and thoughts are my own.

Driving the Kia Soul

As the valet pulled up to us, upon our arrival in Orlando, in the Kia Soul, the first thing I took notice of was how much it looked like a Stormtrooper helmet on wheels. I think because we were in Florida for Star Wars weekend at Disney I may have had Star Wars on the brain.

My son, Norrin, however noticed something else. “That’s the hamster car,” he said looking like he was expecting the valet to be just that.

The fun part of driving the Kia Soul was discovering its features on the fly.

I, like many men, dismiss reading instruction manuals and reference them only in a bind. With the Soul it was one welcome surprise after another. I have to admit I was not very familiar with the Kia Soul, other than the aforementioned commercial, so its features were all a mystery to me.

Our initial drive to our hotel was made that much easier with the in dash navigation unit that was equipped on the Soul we had. It easily paired via Bluetooth with my iPhone and accessed my contacts making it easier for us to set destinations either using voice activation or manually.

The head unit in the Soul is also SiriusXM satellite compatible, and the HD radio provided a crisp clear sound. My favorite feature was being able to access and play music apps and playlists already on my cell phone using the Bluetooth audio feature. The dash mounted center speaker combined with a rear subwoofer and four door mounted speakers were excellent in being able to handle low bass exceptionally well. If it was Lana Del Rey or Wu Tang Clan the sound was phenomenal. Add to that the two tower mounted tweeters which projected clear highs which made my listening to Sinatra feel like I was in a concert hall.

I was delighted to find at night how much the mood lighting adds to the driving experience. I only discovered this feature by happenstance when I spied the lighting knob to the left of the steering column. After I did driving at night without it on was not an option.

What impressed me most was how much luxury Kia packed in a car so economical. When I activated the sunroof for the first time I had no idea that it stretched all the way to the rear seats. It was not only a surprise to me, but also to my son who was seated in the rear. It made driving under a starry night sky that much more engaging. In addition to the comfort of the plush leather seating of the Soul my boy had a hard time staying awake watching those very stars.

What Atypical Dad Loves about the Kia Soul

The electronic power steering was intuitive and made for a driving experience that felt more at home in a car that possesses a higher sticker price. I was also surprised at how smooth and comfortable the ride of the Soul was. At times it felt as if it was driving itself.

I have to say that the week we spent in Florida provided us with some great memories and some good times. Driving the Kia Soul added to those good times. It’s just a fun car to drive.

I’ve had these skates for 5 years and I finally I’ve had these skates for 5 years and I finally got to skate in them for real. “Why do my skates feel funny?” I wondered. I assumed it was because I’m not used to roller skates. So I spent the first 15 minutes skating with my skates on the wrong feet 🙄😐🤦🏻‍♀️ but once I fixed them - skating was a little bit easier. 🤣🤣
When the student becomes the teacher… I got to w When the student becomes the teacher… I got to workout with one of my (favorite) former students this morning! From the moment I met her 2 years ago, I knew she was a force to be reckoned with. In the classroom, she is enthusiastic, bright, confident and strong. But at the gym she’s next level! Mel really pushed me today and I know I’ll feel it tomorrow. It wasn’t easy keeping up with this 19 year old. I held my own up until she said 20 minutes on the stair master after our work out. I lasted 5 minutes and then did 15 on the elliptical. 🫠🫠 And obviously we needed a quick locker room photo shoot. 🤣 Also…I don’t know if it’s the angle or the lighting but I can’t believe my arms/back look like that! 😳🥹

When I think about where I was and where I am now, When I think about where I was and where I am now, I am so damn grateful. I used to believe that I “wasted” the best years of my life. I was so wrong. I am living my best years and fully present in my life. 🤍 5/6/18 🤍 5 years one day at a time (sometimes one hour, one minute, one second).

Started reading Carmen and Grace by @melissacossaq Started reading Carmen and Grace by @melissacossaquino on the 6 train. By page 5, I had to close the book and take a minute to absorb the words on the page. Ok ok ok, I also may have begun tearing up a bit. I love when a book makes me feel. There are times when I come across a book, and the words are exactly what I need at that precise moment. This is that book, this is the time. “The only way out for you is through.” 🤍

Yes. It does. But what feels even better is that I feel strong. Stronger than I’ve ever felt in my entire life. Thanks for an amazing class @freelikeoj_allday & @tiabrooks_0106 for always offering to take a picture.

Earlier this week, I was unpacking my spring/summe Earlier this week, I was unpacking my spring/summer clothes. I found 3 dresses that I’ve had forever - probably 15 years. They were probably only worn once. I held on to them, even though I couldn’t fit into them. Because I knew one day, I would fit into them again. Over the last 2 years, I’ve lost some weight but they still didn’t fit last summer. When I tried them on this week, they fit! I haven’t been able to fit into these dresses in more than a decade. And so yesterday I put on the blue dress. I didn’t go anywhere spectacular. I wasn’t on a date. I visited a friend in the neighborhood, went to a meeting and then White Castle (don’t judge me). When I first bought this dress and when it fit, I held on to it - waiting for an occasion. I refuse to do that. I’m not waiting for a man to take me out, or a party or an event. If I want to wear something, I will wear it. I am the special occasion. I am the event. I am worth getting dressed up for.

Also - I realize that holding on to clothing for 15 years hoping it will fit again is probably not normal. But oh well. 🤷🏻‍♀️🤣
