Last week we went to the Autism Friendly Bello Mania show at The New Victory Theater. “The New Victory Theater is New York City’s first and only full-time performing arts theater for kids and their families and classmates.” And it’s the perfect venue to create an autism friendly space.
The theater is grand without being overwhelming. I love that lockers were available so that we were able to check in our coats. But I especially appreciated how Autism Friendly Spaces made us feel at home.
We’ve been to sensory film screenings where the lights were dimmed and the volume lowered but Autism Friendly Spaces takes it a step further. They converted the ladies room into a family bathroom – so convenient. There were fidgets for every kid as well as bean bags, bubbles and multiple coloring stations. There were schedules posted on walls and ‘first’ and ‘then’ laminated cards to help with transition were readily available. They even provided ear plugs.
During intermission, Norrin was sitting at one of tables coloring. I knew the show would be starting soon and asked him to stop coloring. One of the volunteers immediately approached us and offered assistance with transitioning. We didn’t need it, but I was so grateful for the offer. It was so nice to be surrounded by people who made such an effort to understand and make things a little bit easier.
When it comes to trying new things, I am always hesitant. I never know how Norrin will react. If he’ll like it or if he’ll have a melt down. But he enjoyed Bello Mania. I spent the first 20 minutes of the show watching Norrin, watch the performance. Seeing the smile on his face was amazing. And I’m so happy I took the chance to try something new.
There was a time, when I never could have imagined us sitting in a Times Square theater. Thanks to The New Victory Theater and Autism Friendly Spaces we were able to. And I hope there are many more opportunities for us to do so.
In order to make the show more accessible to individuals on the autism spectrum and their families, Bello Mania adapted the show/theatre in the following ways:
Sound in the production will be lowered and staff will warn of any upcoming loud noises during the show.
Lights in the seating area will be dimmed rather than fully dark during the performance.
A Relaxed Atmosphere allows patrons to talk and vocalize as they wish, as well as leave and re-enter the seating area as needed.
An Activity Area will be available with a live video feed of the show, coloring sheets and fidget toys if patrons need to take a break from the seating area.
A Calming Corner will be available with fidget toys and bean bag chairs if patrons need a quiet place to relax.
Autism Specialists will be available throughout the performance to provide assistance as requested or needed.
A Family Restroom (gender-neutral) will be available.
