Bask in the Sun without Burning: 3 Summer Skincare Tips

May 31, 2014 by Lisa Leave a Comment

Norrin started baseball a few few weeks ago. On the day of his first game, I sat on the bleachers basking in pride and the bright rays of the sun. I was wearing my new favorite summer dress and jean jacket. Later that evening as I was changing out of my clothes, I noticed that my chest was red and felt the sting of a slight burn. I wasn’t out in the sun long and it wasn’t a particularly too hot but it was enough to burn.

I am good about taking care of my face, applying SPF even during the cold months of winter. But as the weather gets warmer, I forget about the rest of my body.

There was a time in my life when I baked in the sun for hours, lathering my limbs in baby oil to achieve the maximum tan.

These days, I understand the importance of taking care of my skin. But still there are times I forget.

I think that if I’m not going to the beach, sunscreen isn’t necessary.

Oh…but it is. It really is! And today, as I get ready for Norrin’s baseball, I’ll be sure to lather my limbs with Lubriderm’s Daily Moisture Lotion with Sunscreen.

I’ve been using Lubriderm Moisture Lotions since the beginning of this year and I love it. In the winter months, my apartment gets insanely hot and my skin tends to get dry. What I love about Lubriderm is that it’s creamy without feeling sticky. My skin feels smooth and I am obsessed with Lubriderm’s Shea + Calming Lavender Jasmine. I use it twice a day.

After my first little burn of the spring, I’ve switched things up. In the morning I use the Lubriderm with SPF. I like that it gives me the protection of a sunscreen without feeling thick and greasy. It’s really the best of both worlds for me.  And it’s one less thing for me to think about.

As temperatures rise and the sun rays shine this summer, it is important for Latinas to understand the importance of skincare and sun protection. Although Latinas have a higher concentration of melanin (what gives skin its pigment), they are still prone to skin aging and cancer if they do not use protection. LUBRIDERM® Hispanic Board Certified Dermatologist, Dr. Maria Patricia Rivas shares her tips on how to nourish and protect your skin this summer for a flawless, supple appearance.

Keep your skin moisturized. The lotion you select should be determined based on your skin type: normal, dry, sensitive, etc. It is important to use a moisturizing lotion all over the body at least once a day. LUBRIDERM® Daily Moisture Lotion is great for everyday use because it is formulated with vitamin B5 and other skin essential moisturizers to improve the moisture barrier for visibly healthier skin that feels soft and smooth.

If you suffer from dry skin, it is recommended to use a lotion twice a day including once after you shower or bathe. For patients with dryer skin, LUBRIDERM® Advanced Therapy Lotion is a non-greasy, fast-absorbing formula that works to relieve and restore extra dry skin for a healthy-looking appearance.

Apply ‘broad spectrum’ sunscreen daily. Even on cloudy days, UV rays have the ability to reach our skin causing hyperpigmentation and potentially, skin cancer.

The FDA regulations require companies to tell the consumer what type of UV protection a sunscreen offers and what type of rays the sunscreen is capable of protecting against. To be labeled broad spectrum means that the product protects against UVA and UVB rays. The LUBRIDERM® Daily Moisture Lotion with Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 15, for example, has a fast absorbing formula that delivers broad-spectrum UVA/UVB protection and long-lasting moisture.

Wear sunscreen when near the water and sand and take protective measures. It is especially important to wear sunscreen when we are near the water and sand because these surfaces reflect the damaging rays of the sun, increasing your chance of sunburn. Besides using sunscreens and lotions, it is recommended to wear protective clothing such as long-sleeved shirts, wide-brimmed hats and sunglasses.

I’ve had these skates for 5 years and I finally I’ve had these skates for 5 years and I finally got to skate in them for real. “Why do my skates feel funny?” I wondered. I assumed it was because I’m not used to roller skates. So I spent the first 15 minutes skating with my skates on the wrong feet 🙄😐🤦🏻‍♀️ but once I fixed them - skating was a little bit easier. 🤣🤣
When the student becomes the teacher… I got to w When the student becomes the teacher… I got to workout with one of my (favorite) former students this morning! From the moment I met her 2 years ago, I knew she was a force to be reckoned with. In the classroom, she is enthusiastic, bright, confident and strong. But at the gym she’s next level! Mel really pushed me today and I know I’ll feel it tomorrow. It wasn’t easy keeping up with this 19 year old. I held my own up until she said 20 minutes on the stair master after our work out. I lasted 5 minutes and then did 15 on the elliptical. 🫠🫠 And obviously we needed a quick locker room photo shoot. 🤣 Also…I don’t know if it’s the angle or the lighting but I can’t believe my arms/back look like that! 😳🥹

I was so wrong. I am living my best years and fully present in my life. 🤍 5/6/18 🤍 5 years one day at a time (sometimes one hour, one minute, one second).

Started reading Carmen and Grace by @melissacossaq Started reading Carmen and Grace by @melissacossaquino on the 6 train. By page 5, I had to close the book and take a minute to absorb the words on the page. Ok ok ok, I also may have begun tearing up a bit. I love when a book makes me feel. There are times when I come across a book, and the words are exactly what I need at that precise moment. This is that book, this is the time. “The only way out for you is through.” 🤍

Earlier this week, I was unpacking my spring/summe Earlier this week, I was unpacking my spring/summer clothes. I found 3 dresses that I’ve had forever - probably 15 years. They were probably only worn once. I held on to them, even though I couldn’t fit into them. Because I knew one day, I would fit into them again. Over the last 2 years, I’ve lost some weight but they still didn’t fit last summer. When I tried them on this week, they fit! I haven’t been able to fit into these dresses in more than a decade. And so yesterday I put on the blue dress. I didn’t go anywhere spectacular. I wasn’t on a date. I visited a friend in the neighborhood, went to a meeting and then White Castle (don’t judge me). When I first bought this dress and when it fit, I held on to it - waiting for an occasion. I refuse to do that. I’m not waiting for a man to take me out, or a party or an event. If I want to wear something, I will wear it. I am the special occasion. I am the event. I am worth getting dressed up for.

Also - I realize that holding on to clothing for 15 years hoping it will fit again is probably not normal. But oh well. 🤷🏻‍♀️🤣
